Institutional Values

Our History

Our university grew out of educational institutions in Puerto Rico and Cuba. The Seventh-day Adventist Church opened its first school in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, in 1920. In 1946, it established the Metropolitan Adventist Academy, a comprehensive high school, in Santurce.

Educational Philosophy

Antillean Adventist University recognizes that God, the Creator and Sustainer of the earth and the entire universe, is the source of knowledge and wisdom. God created humankind perfect, in His own image and likeness. Because of sin, humankind lost its original state of perfection. Christian education, through the development of faith in Christ, restores in humankind the image of its Creator and prepares it for service to God and humanity.

Knowledge of God is not obtained through reasoning alone; God has communicated His nature, purposes, and plans through divine revelation. The Holy Scriptures were inspired by God and are the primary source of wisdom, reality, truth, ethics, and aesthetics. This biblical foundation determines the aims of education and our understanding of the nature of the student, the role of the teacher, the curriculum, teaching methodology, and the role of the university in society.

Students possess infinite potential that needs to be developed. Adventist education fosters the continuous, harmonious, and holistic development of all dimensions of character: spiritual, moral, cognitive, physical, and social. Every member of the university community is an agent in this educational process for developing character potential. They are called to be models of spirituality, excellence, and service.

The curriculum will be based on biblical principles and integrate a faith-based perspective to achieve the student’s holistic and balanced development. It will be a dynamic and innovative curriculum that prepares students for social and professional challenges. It provides opportunities for students to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes in various fields of study. Furthermore, through a variety of teaching methods, and following the teachings of Christ, it seeks to develop critical thinking, research skills, problem-solving abilities, effective communication, resource stewardship, and the use of technological advancements. Ultimately, it aims to nurture a vocation and provide students with practical preparation so they can serve God’s work on earth with excellence.
