The approved project is designed to facilitate a portion of Phase I of the University Facilities Master Plan, specifically the construction of an Academic Support Building with three primary functions:

  • A Language Institute, including a computerized language laboratory, enhancing English as a Second Language (ESL) and Spanish as a Second Language (SSL) instruction for current and new students resulting in the improved marketability of students in their chosen profession.
  • New Science Laboratories and multi-media instructional classrooms thereby facilitating up-to-date instruction in biology (general, advanced, and anatomy and physiology), chemistry (general, organic, and analytical), and allowing for the expansion of high demand nursing and allied health programs.
  • The Academic Support and Tutoring Center to promote and facilitate the success of students requiring remediation in English, Spanish, and Mathematics.

Whereas the funding assistance from the federal government was to cover part of the cost of a 12,000-square-foot building, the University Board of Trustees voted to increase the size of the building to 20,000 square feet to accommodate growth in enrollment.
