Mission

The mission of the SSL facet of the U. S. TITTLE V PROJECT at Antillean is to:

  • Provide much needed Spanish Language instruction to non-Spanish-speaking students already registered at Antillean.
  • Promote the influx of non-Spanish speaking students to Antillean, creating bilingual individuals
  • Encourage the university's traditional nurturing environment to encompass our non-Spanish speaking population, enhancing not only their well-being, but also their academic excellence through a better understanding of our cultural idiosyncrasies and language nuances.

 

Goals

  • To provide a nurturing environment for students interested in acquiring the Spanish language.
  • To enhance the ability of non-native Spanish speaking students, enabling them to benefit from their College education in Puerto Rico.
  • To provide native and non-native students the appropriate language instruction in order to achieve sufficient proficiency to perform well at the College level.

Courses Descriptions

HUSP 104 Elementary Spanish I-II 6 cr.300-minute lecture per week plus Lab assignments. Course designed for beginning non-Spanish speaking students. Speaking and listening training are emphasied through a conversational approach. Grammar points are discussed as they arise in conversation. Additional Lab attendance required. Placement exam required.

HUSP 105 Intermediate and Advanced Spanish 6 cr. 300-minute lecture per week plus Lab assignments. Course designed for non-Spanish speaking students whose experience and knowledge of the language are above a high-beginner. Speaking and listening are emphasized through a conversational approach. Grammar points are discussed as they arise in conversation. Additional Lab attendance required. Requirements: HUSP 104, equivalent or Placement Exam; Exit Exam.

HUSP 110 Basic Skills in Spanish 3 cr. (A Remedial level course.) Course designed to provide the Spanish speakers and the non-native Spanish speakers who have an advanced knowledge of the language, the development of basic skills in the use and management of the Spanish language. Includes intensive reading, comprehension, analysis and writing as means to hone orthography and morpho-syntax and expand vocabulary. Requirements: HUSP 104; HUSP 105 or their equivalent; below 70% in the native speaker's Diagnostic/Placement Exam; below 436 in the Spanish CEEB.

Procedures

  • Students will take the corresponding placement exam, whether native or non-native speaker.
  • Labs are assigned by levels, according to the level of the course being taken.
  • Some courses have exit level requirements that must be met:
    • exit exams
    • finals
    • passing grade requirements for specific courses to be determined by Academic Departments
