Students who wish to continue a career in medicine or dentistry and would like to increase their chances to enter those schools, are recommended to take the premedical or pre-dental concentration programs as part of the BA program. The purpose of these programs is to provide students with additional training, experiences, and skills to increase their opportunities to enter a school of medicine and dentistry.


Medicine

It is recommended that the student who plans to enter a School of Medicine, complete a bachelor’s degree which includes those courses that the School of Medicine of their choice, considers as admissions requirements. The student, who wishes to be admitted to any Medical School in Puerto Rico or in the United States of America, must be fully proficient in the English language.

The student requesting admission to the Loma Linda School of Medicine must complete the following general entrance requirements.

  • General Biology or Zoology (with lab) – 8 credits
  • General Chemistry or Inorganic Chemistry I, II (with lab) – 8 credits
  • Organic Chemistry I, II (with lab) – 8 credits
  • General Physics I, II (with lab) – 8 credits
  • English (equivalent to satisfy baccalaureate degree requirement)
  • Religion (12 credits)
  • Biochemistry is strongly recommended
  • Keyboard and computer skills are considered essential
  • An introductory course in basic statistics is recommended
  • It is recommended that students include in their curriculum, courses in the humanities and the social sciences

Applicants are required to present Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores prior to consideration by the admissions committee. MCAT scores older than three years are not considered. Applicants are urged to take the MCAT in the spring of the year of the year of application and to have the basic requirements completed at the time of application.

Loma Linda University accepts students who have completed a Bachelor's degree (the student must complete a minimum of 85 credits). The student must maintain a GPA of A/B in the Sciences and the general requirement courses.

In addition, the student must take the Medical College Admission Test, no latter than October of the year before applying for admission to the School of Medicine.


Dentistry

The School of Dentistry gives preference to students who have a wide background given by a Bachelor degree (preferably in science).  The student who wishes to be admitted in the University of Puerto Rico School of Dentistry or any other school of dentistry in the US must be proficient in the English language.

A student requesting admission to the Loma Linda School of Dentistry must complete the following courses:

Natural Science

  • General Biology I, II and/or Zoology with laboratory
  • General chemistry I, II with laboratory
  • Organic Chemistry I, II with laboratory
  • College Physics I, II with laboratory
  • Biochemistry (1 semester/recommended 1 year)
  • Communication Advanced English Grammar and Composition

Recommended Courses

  • Accounting
  • Anatomy
  • Calculus
  • Histology
  • Information System/Computer
  • Management
  • Neuroscience
  • Physiology
  • Religion – one course per year

Minimum Units (credits) Needed: 96 Semester Units

The student must take the Dental Admission Test (DAT), no later than October of the year previous to his/her application to the School of Dentistry


Pre-Engineering

The pre- engineering program offered at Antillean Adventist University is part of an integrated professional program of engineering which leads to a BS in Engineering. The first two years are taken at Antillean, followed by two years at Walla Walla College, College Place Washington.  Walla Walla College is the institution granting the degree. There are options in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Computer Engineering. Details of each student’s program will depend on placement in English and mathematics courses. The program must be prepared via consultation with the coordinator of the Engineering Program.


Physical Therapy

This program is coordinated with Andrews University and Loma Linda University.  To qualify for admission to an accredited college it is usually recommended that students complete courses in English, Spanish, behavioral/social studies, mathematics, science, religion, music.  These basic requirements can be supplemented with electives to broaden intellectual interests and to increase the total number of credits required.  An additional requirement for the applicant is 80 hours of direct clinical observation or work experience with a physical therapist.

Students enter the professional program through a separate application and selective registration process.  The application for this professional program is available through the Physical Therapy Department (at Antillean or LLU).  Before entering the Professional Physical Therapy Program, a student whose first language is not English, must present the results of the MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment  Battery ) a minimum score of 80 is required; or the results of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) a minimum score of 550 is required.  The MELAB can be taken at Andrews or at other examination centers; however, the results must be received before entering the program.
