Antillean Adventist University came into existence as a result of educational institutions in Puerto Rico and Cuba. The Seventh-Day Adventist Church opened its first school in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, in 1920.
During 1945 it established a complete high school in Santurce, the Metropolitan Adventist Academy. In 1957 the Puerto Rican Adventist College was founded in Mayagüez.

In May 196l, this college received the approval to offer the university level programs that had been offered before by Antillian College in Santa Clara, Cuba.

In September 1961, the college opened its doors under the name of Puerto Rican Adventist College; and later, in March of 1962, its name was changed to Antillian College.
On August 18, 1989, the Puerto Rico Higher Education Council authorized the name of "Universidad Adventista de las Antillas".
