The Language Institute, opened in the spring of 2008, refocuses the university's efforts toward ensuring that the changing needs of English as a foreign language and English as a second language students may be met with greater attention. A state of the art language laboratory complete with Tell Me More and the Cambridge Academic Dictionary is available to students. Additional computers are also available in both the library and the dormitories.

Upon entering UAA, students are required to take the Accuplacer placement exam (Levels of English Proficiency) which determines which course would best meet the students' learning objectives. Beginning the summer of 2009, students may also take advantage of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam, should their interest in graduate or professional studies carry them outside of the island.
